Rhizostomins: A Novel Pigment Family From Rhizostome Jellyfish (Cnidaria, Scyphozoa)

چکیده

Many pigments, such as melanins, are widely distributed throughout the animal kingdom. Others have arisen novelties in particular lineages, for example, Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) found cnidarians. While GFPs, used fluorescent tags biomedical research, most famous cnidarian other novel proteins also been identified within this phylum. A blue protein that contains a Kringle (KR) domain inserted Frizzled cysteine-rich (Fz-CRD) was previously described from jellyfish Rhizostoma pulmo (named rpulFKz1), however little is known about pigment’s evolution or distribution among We performed systematic search homologs of published genomes and transcriptomes 93 Phylogenetic analyses revealed eight predicted possess both domains same arrangement fall clade rpulFKz1. The sequence one these motifs match sequenced peptides Cassio Blue, pigment Cassiopea xamachana . Another belongs to Stomolophus meleagris , chemical studies on pigments may occur genus shown similarities rpulFKz1 Blue. Therefore, we hypothesize precursors. All precursors were exclusive order Rhizostomeae, so herein name new family “rhizostomins.” Not all rhizostomes analyzed blue, however, rhizostomin be responsible colors, perform biochemical biophysical roles. Previous hypothesized photoprotective, study serves basis future investigations not only function rhizostomins, but potential biotechnological applications proteins.

First confirmed reports of the rhizostome jellyfish Mastigias (Cnidaria: Rhizostomeae) in the Atlantic basin

The rhizostome jellyfish Mastigias (Agassiz, 1862), native to the western and central Indo-Pacific, is recorded from the western Atlantic, in a marine lake in Puerto Rico (Laguna Joyuda) and a working quarry on No Name Key, Florida (USA) in the Florida Keys. The single individual from Laguna Joyuda, collected in 2002, was previously misidentified as Phyllorhiza (Agassiz, 1862) and Mastigias has...

Lack of genetic structure in the jellyfish Pelagia noctiluca (Cnidaria: Scyphozoa: Semaeostomeae) across European seas.

The genetic structure of the holopelagic scyphozoan Pelagia noctiluca was inferred based on the study of 144 adult medusae. The areas of study were five geographic regions in two European seas (Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea). A 655-bp sequence of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI), and a 645-bp sequence of two nuclear internal transcribed spacers (ITS1 and ITS2) were an...

Macro-morphological variation among cryptic species of the moon jellyfish, Aurelia (Cnidaria: Scyphozoa)

Morphological variation in qualitative and quantitative features is compared among species of Aurelia defined a priori using molecular criteria. Macromorphological features were more numerous than previously implied (28 cf. 17), most were variable (26 of 28), and all species were morphologically distinguishable using univariate, multivariate and phylogenetic statistics. However, due to discrepa...

First Evidence of Inbreeding, Relatedness and Chaotic Genetic Patchiness in the Holoplanktonic Jellyfish Pelagia noctiluca (Scyphozoa, Cnidaria)

Genetic drift and non-random mating seldom influence species with large breeding populations and high dispersal potential, characterized by unstructured gene pool and panmixia at a scale lower than the minimum dispersal range of individuals. In the present study, a set of nine microsatellite markers was developed and used to investigate the spatio-temporal genetic patterns of the holoplanktonic...

Molecular evidence for cryptic species of Aurelia aurita (Cnidaria, Scyphozoa).

Morphological taxonomy suggests that marine faunas are species poor compared to terrestrial and freshwater faunas (1). This dichotomy has been attributed to the unique potential of marine plankters for distant dispersal across homogenous oceans with few barriers to gene flow (2). The relative scarcity of opportunities for allopatric divergence has resulted in depauperate marine faunas character...
